"The First Flight"

In Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on the morning of December 17, 1903 two bicycle engineers who happened to be brothers, succeeded in doing what many have tried, but failed.  Brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright flew in a heavier than air machine "plane" which they invented themselves.

On their first attempt with Orville at the controls, the plane traveled 120 feet through the air, staying airborn for a total of twelve seconds.  On their third attempt, they kept the plane aloft for a total of 59 seconds with the air distance of 852 feet.
