The Apache Indians were greatly
feared by most of the Southwest United States and most of the Great
Plains tribes. They were well-known for their raids on the Spanish
and Mexican people that inhabited areas around them. Most of the
raids were lead by Geronimo, a fierce and
intimidating Indian chief.
Early Apache Indians were mainly
nomadic, with scarce farming in some areas. They hunted bison,
using their skins, meat, horns, and just about every body part imagineable
for themselves. They rarely wasted anything they killed.
The Apaches were the 6 main
Athabaskan-speaking
tribes of the Southwest. There were the Kiowa Apache of northern
New
Mexico, the Lipan of eastern New Mexico
and western Texas, the Jicarilla of southern New
Mexico, the Mescalero of central New Mexico,
the Chiricahua of the Chiricahua Mountains of southwest Arizona and the
Western Apache of central Arizona.
