Where Sitting Bull roamed as a youngster and throughout life.
The territory where Sitting Bull lived was known, at the time, as the Dakota Territory. It was a plains area, with rolling fields and many, many animals. There were buffalo, which were hunted for clothing, food, sport and many other reasons. There were also antelope that were also hunted by just about everyone in the territory hunted like crazy! The buffalo, for example, were so heavily hunted that the population went from millions to thousands in about 100 years! The territory was also being fought over, though. Between the Sioux Indians fighting for hunting grounds and the whites fighting for land in general, there was no room for peaceful tribes. So, for most of Sitting Bull's adult life, he was fighting over the land in which his people would live!
