He decided when he moved to New York that he didn't want to work for somebody so he and his partner set up Pope, Edison, and Company. The designed and sold new telegraphic equipment. The pair broke up but he had made enough money to set up a telegraph manufacturing and laboratory in Newark, New Jersey. There he met Mary Stillwell and married her in 1871. They had 3 children.
