One day Tom noticed a runaway cart. There was a little boy sitting on the tracks playing with his toys. He ran over and barely saved the little boys life. The boy happened to belong to the stationmaster that employed him. His name was Mr. Mackenzie. He agreed to repay Tom by teaching him all he knew about telegraphy. Tom had a job as his assistant.
