Tom was given his first job on the railroad and the age of twelve. He sold newspapers and food on the train. Tom's boss allowed him to bring his laboratory onto the train. He helped James get a job as well so that they could both work on creating different things. They also could get their work done faster and have more time to work in the laboratory.
