Caribou are from the subarctic area and were their hides were used for tents covers, tunics, moccasins and eight or nine would be used to make winter clothes for an adult. Bartered caribou hides were sold along with snow shoes for seal oil, ivory and many other marine products. Every spring the caribou left the forest and moved to the Baren Lands for summer grazing. In the fall they would return to the forests and on good years they herded in numbers up to ten thousand!
