Vermont was the first state to abolish slavery, which was in 1777. Massachusetts was next in 1783 followed by Connecticut in 1784. In 1787, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton argued to outlaw slavery, but things did not go as they planned. They did win in one way because the slave trade would end in 20 years (1807), but this did not end slavery, just the importing of slaves.
